They say that the two biggest tourist attractions in Wisconsin are wood and water, which meet at the Harbor Towns that line Lake Superior and Lake Michigan.

Sturgeon Bay is the hub of Door Country, which has been billed as the Cape Cod of the Midwest. In addition to 10 lighthouses, the peninsula also has five state parks, 400 kilometres (250 miles) of shoreline, and more than a dozen conservation areas. Or consider Green Bay. You won't be surprised to hear that the city is home to a museum dedicated to the Green Bay Packers, but you probably didn't know that it was one of the first cities in the Midwest to be settled, and thus has a rich historical heritage.

Then there's Milwaukee, billed as "the Genuine American City." Many of its famous breweries either offer tours or have visitor centres. The Germans not only brought their beer recipes to the New World, but also their cooking, making German food a highlight of a Milwaukee visit. Finally, don't forget to drop by the city's Harley-Davidson Museum.

Moving west, you'll find the state capital of Madison. It's a nice place to visit, but you'd also want to live there, as it routinely tops lists of the best places to live in the United States. It's both a state capital and a college town, so the place is humming, especially at night. Grab a bike and explore.

No look at Wisconsin tourism would be complete without a mention of the legendary Wisconsin Dells. This community is jam-packed with water parks, including Noah's Ark, one of the largest water parks in the United States. The nearby dells offer spectacular rock formations, and when you tire of the theme parks, they're well worth the trip.
